Given that most of these services are subject to a major 'land grab' when it comes to naming, I thought it might be suitable to reserve a spot for the Faculty.  Therefore, in the future, if you are a Twitter user and wish to follow news and activities at the Faculty, you can do so by following the account @cambridgelaw (http://twitter.com/cambridgelaw). Apple's Software Arrogance - 19/05/2009 The level of arrogance displayed by Apple when it comes to a number of software packages that they offer is sometimes pretty breathtaking.  If you want to install itunes, you get with in the package Quicktime, Bonjour, the ipod service (regardless of whether you own an ipod!), and a number of other related services.  All these things are installed in a way which could be considered to be underhand, in that you aren't presented with clear options to proceed without them.Apple updater has also received criticisms over the years, for carrying out a similar function - introducing new software onto users' systems without their express consent.  This is a blatant twisting of the common usage of 'update'.  To what extent is a beta browser an update to itunes?I came across a new 'feature' of Apple software updates today: I'm running the Safari beta for testing purposes, and the Apple Updater notified me of an update.  Sure enough the update was completed, but now I find a new Safari icon on my desktop, and also my quicklaunch toolbar.  Again, without express consent (as almost all Windows installers implement by default), and contrary to anything in the Safari EULA.Of course it's not a big issue - these things can be deleted again.  It's the approach that concerns me, and the disregard Apple show for users' control over their own PCs. Westlaw authentication problems - 18/05/2009 Anyone trying to access Westlaw remotely (ie. externally from the University network via Raven) at the back end of last week would have discovered a problem logging in. This was down the the classic technical problem of 'improvements'!.  It would seem that a raft of improvements which we implemented caused the issue.  The problem should now be solved, but please do let me know if you continue to experience issues. For information, the improvements (which will now be implemented following further (successful!) testing) should be: • Search Westlaw UK Crime and Westlaw UK Scots Law via our new interface • Better and more easily edit and manage your alerts • Start receiving alerts related to legislation • Delve further into the Common Law Library • Stay up to date with the very latest legal developments, every day LL.M. and Ph.D booking now open - 04/10/2005 I have posted the booking forms for the various optional LL.M. and Ph.D. legal research sessions available this term outside the Freshfields Room (second floor of the Faculty).
