Institute of Criminology Public Seminars: 'Crime and Decision Theory'
Speaker: Professor Lawrence W Sherman, Wolfson Professor of Criminology, University of Cambridge.
Major Advances in decision theory, as synthesized by Nobel-Prize winner Daniel Kahneman's new book, ‘THINKING, FAST AND SLOW’, can now be applied to three key areas of criminology. One is decisions by offenders to commit crimes (or not), in ways that may connect directly to Wikström's Situational Action Theory or life-course desistance. A second is decisions by justice officials to take action (or not, or of different kinds) against offences and offenders. The third is decisions about major changes or projects in criminal justice strategies or reforms. The seminar will consider how best to connect Kahneman's analyses of all three general arenas of decision-making to the specific criminological issues they can inform.
Lawrence W. Sherman is the Wolfson Professor of Criminology in the Institute of Criminology at the University of Cambridge, where he is also Director of the Jerry Lee Centre for Experimental Criminology and Director of the Cambridge Police Executive Programme. The winner of the most recent Benjamin Franklin Medal of the Royal Society of Arts, his research interests are in defiance and compliance theory, crime prevention, evidence-based policy, restorative justice, police practices and criminal justice strategy.
All seminars start at 5.00pm,and are held in Seminar Room B3, Institute of Criminology, Sidgwick Ave, Cambridge, CB3 9DA. A drinks reception in the basement foyer will follow this seminar for attendees.
