Institute of Criminology Public Seminars: 'Psychopathic Personality: Capturing an Elusive Clinical Concept'
Speaker: Professor David J Cooke, Glasgow Caledonian University, and Visiting Professor at Bergen University, Norway.
Psychopathic personality disorder has long been associated with criminal and antisocial behaviour. The measurement of this disorder is fraught with difficulties and the methods applied clinically to assess the disorder have evolved significantly over the last two decades. The importance of this disorder in relation to offending will be considered. The development of a new approach to the assessment of the disorder -- The Comprehensive Assessment of Psychopathic Personality (CAPP) -- will be described. Challenges and controversies in the field will be considered. David Cooke is a Professor of Psychology at Glasgow Caledonian University and also a Visiting Professor at Bergen University, Norway. For 23 years he was Head of the Forensic Clinical Psychology Service in Glasgow. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the British Psychological Society. He is currently President of the European Association of Psychology and Law. He has a longstanding interest in risk assessment and psychopathic personality disorder. He was awarded a Cropwood Fellowship at the Institute of Criminology in Cambridge during the early stages of his forensic career.
