Patricia Collis is a trade mark attorney at Bird & Bird in London. Bird & Bird is an international law firm with offices in 28 countries. While an increasing number of high profile trade mark, copyright and design cases are now being heard by the Courts, both in the UK and at European level, IP law keeps a host of people buy throughout the year. A key (though relatively unknown) group are trade mark attorneys, helping companies of all sizes select, protect, maintain and defend their brand rights. The main focus of this talk is a case study demonstrating the combination of legal knowledge, commercial assessment and tactical thought required in this profession. It will conclude with an overview of the qualification process for trade mark attorneys.
