Patricia Collis is a trade mark attorney at Bird & Bird in London. Bird & Bird is an international law firm with offices in 28 countries. Whilst offering services across a range of legal areas they are particularly well known for their work in the Intellectual Property sphere. The team works across all areas of IP, including brand management which is handled by a mixed team of trade mark attorneys and solicitors. If anyone is interested in learning more about the trade mark attorney profession or Bird & Bird (and options for training there as either a solicitor or a trade mark attorney) you can contact Patricia on patricia.collis@twobirds.com or via LinkedIn.

While an increasing number of high profile trade mark, copyright and design cases are now being heard by the Courts, both in the UK and at European level, IP law keeps a host of people buy throughout the year. A key (though relatively unknown) group are trade mark attorneys, helping companies of all sizes select, protect, maintain and defend their brand rights. The main focus of this talk is a case study demonstrating the combination of legal knowledge, commercial assessment and tactical thought required in this profession. It will conclude with an overview of the qualification process for trade mark attorneys.
