Law Faculty Scholarships and Studentships 2014/15The Faculty is pleased to announce that it has been able to make the following Scholarships, Studentships and grants to assist incoming LLM, MCL, and research students.

AHRC Awards

Three-year studentships were awarded to Oliver Butler (Emmanuel College), Lorenzo Maniscalco (Trinity Hall) and Emilija Marcinkeviciute (Trinity College). Oliver is British and read Law as an undergraduate at Cambridge from 2007-10 and was awarded a First in each part of the Tripos. He also holds a Distinction in the BCL from Oxford. His doctoral research, under the joint supervision of Dr David Erdos and Dr Kirsty Hughes, will be on the topic "Information Law in an Era of Public Services Commissioning: the Implications for Privacy, Confidentiality and Data Protection". Lorenzo is Italian/French and graduated with a Distinction in his LLM from University College London last year. His PhD research on the topic "The Concept of Equity in Early-Modern European Legal History" will be supervised by Professor David Ibbetson. Emilija is from Lithuania and graduated with First Class Honours earlier this year in our LLM. She also holds an LLM from the University of Texas at Austin. Her PhD research, which will be supervised by Dr Michael Waibel is on "The European Union as a New Player in Investment Dispute Settlement: Questions of International Responsibility".

Arnold McNair Scholarship

Awarded to Jack Stewart (Queens’ College) to assist with the costs of his LLM at Cambridge this year. Jack has just finished his BA in Law at Cambridge and was awarded firsts in all three parts.

Travers Smith PhD Studentship

A three-year Faculty PhD studentship in Private Law (to be named the Travers Smith PhD Studentship in recognition of the firm’s generous support of the Faculty) was awarded to Rajiv Shah of Downing College. Rajiv is from the Seychelles and graduated with our BA in Law in 2013 and with First Class Honours in our LLM last year. His doctoral research, under the supervision of Professor Graham Virgo, will be on the topic "The Limits of Unjust Enrichment: A Taxonomy of Bars and Defences to Unjust Enrichment". Under the terms of the Studentship, Rajiv will be doing some small group teaching (now called 'graduate workshops') in Private Law papers in our LLM throughout the duration of the award.

Two Faculty PhD Studentships (one in Corporate Law and one in Tax Law) are on offer for students applying in the 2015/16 admissions round.

Herbert Smith Freehills African Bursary

Awarded by the Faculty's LLM Admissions Committee jointly to two incoming MCL students from Africa, Onoriode Aziza (Wolfson College) and Adeola Owoade (Darwin College). Onoriode completed his Bachelors degree in law at Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria, in November 2012 and obtained a First Class result. Adeola completed his Bachelors degree in law at Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria, in November 2009 and obtained a First Class result. The scholarship comprises payment of 50% of the tuition fee for each student, and a one week work experience placement for each student at Herbert Smith Freehills in one of the vacations periods during the MCL year.

Maitland Studentship in Legal History

A four-year studentship was awarded to Julia Kelsoe of Clare College to support her MPhil in Early Modern Legal History and her PhD in History. Julia is American and has recently graduated with a BA from the University of Pennsylvania.

Prathiba M Singh Cambridge Scholarship

Awarded to Deepika Sriram (Wolfson College). Deepika completed her Bachelors degree in Law at National Law University, Delhi, India, earlier this year and obtained a cumulative grade point average of 7.74/8.0. The Scholarship is intended for Indian students who wish to specialise in Intellectual Property Law and who intend to pursue a legal career in India.

School PhD Bursary Funding

PhD bursary awards were made to Christopher Markou (Jesus College), Darragh Coffey (Darwin College), and also to a PhD student in Criminology. Christopher is British and graduated last year with a high first class in his LLB from the University of Manchester. His doctoral research, under the supervision of Dr Kirsty Hughes, will be on the topic "How Does Living under Constant Surveillance Harm the Populace and What Role can the Law Play in Mitigating that Harm?" Darragh is Irish and will be taking leave from his military career as a serving Army Officer in order to pursue his PhD, under the supervision of Professor Stephanie Palmer, on the topic "Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights and the Expulsion of Terror Suspects from the UK: Have National Security Concerns Diluted an Absolute Right?". 

Wright Rogers Scholarships

Wright Rogers Scholarships (one year awards in the first instance) were awarded to Christopher Markou of Jesus College and Jeffrey Thomson of Hughes Hall.

Christopher is British and graduated last year with a high first class in his LLB from the University of Manchester. His doctoral research, under the supervisor of Dr Kirsty Hughes, will be on the topic "How Does Living under Constant Surveillance Harm the Populace and What Role can the Law Play in Mitigating that Harm?".

Jeffrey is Canadian and graduated with First Class Honours in both his BCommerce at McGill in 1999 and his LLB in English and French Law at King’s College London. He has substantial professional legal experience including, most recently as a Senior Associate at Norton Rose Fulbright. His doctoral research, under the supervision of Professor David Ibbetson, will be on the topic "Marine Insurance Law in England in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries".

In addition to the awards of the Scholarships, the Electors for the Wright Rogers Fund also made non-recurrent grants to Ryan Ferro of Hughes Hall in support of his LLM and to Liron Shmilovits of Downing College in support of his PhD dissertation, to be supervised by Professor David Ibbetson, on the topic "The Role, Utility and Legitimacy of Legal Fiction". Liron read Law at undergraduate level at the University of South Wales but has just graduated with First Class Honours in our LLM. Ryan has just graduated with First Class Honours in his LLB from the University of Warwick.
