Eyal Benvenisti elected to Whewell ProfessorshipThe Faculty is pleased to announce that Professor Eyal Benvenisti has been elected to the Whewell Professorship of International Law. He will join Cambridge's thriving international law community in January 2016.

Eyal Benvenisti is currently the Anny and Paul Yanowicz Professor of Human Rights at Tel Aviv University. He has held visiting appointments at Columbia, Harvard, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Yale Law Schools, as well at as Humboldt University Berlin and the Max Planck Institute of International Law in Heidelberg. Since 2003, he has been a Global visiting Professor at NYU. He is an associate member of the Institut de droit international.

Established in 1867, the Whewell chair is widely regarded as one of the world's most prestigious professorships in international law. Previous holders include Lassa Oppenheim, Sir Arnold McNair, Sir Hersch Lauterpacht, Sir Robert Jennings and Sir Derek Bowett. Professor Benvenisti succeeds Professor James Crawford, AC SC, who held the Chair from 1992-2014 and became a Judge on the International Court of Justice in February 2015.
