Sir Terence Etherton appointed Master of the Rolls

The Queen has approved the appointment of The Rt Hon Sir Terence Etherton as the next Master of the Rolls. A Cambridge graduate, Sir Terence studied history and law at Corpus Christi College, of which he is an Honorary Fellow.

Sir Terence was Chairman of the Law Commission and a Lord Justice of Appeal before becoming Chancellor of the High Court, the head the Chancery Division. He succeeds Lord Dyson, the present Master of the Rolls, in October.

As Master of the Rolls Sir Terence becomes President of the Civil Division of the Court of Appeal and the Head of Civil Justice, and the second most senior judge in England and Wales after the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd, who also studied law at Cambridge.
