It is with great sadness that the Faculty reports the death of John Hopkins.

John was proud of his Yorkshire roots, and was a student of Queens' College and was the Whewell Scholar in 1961. In that year, he was elected to a Fellowship of Downing College, to which he was devoted for the rest of his life.

It was a great pleasure for him to have so many of his pupils (especially judges) to attend his 80th birthday dinner in 2016. His sense of humour, his ability as a raconteur, his enjoyment of music (especially opera) and his devotion to young people were among his many endearing characteristics. He will be sorely missed and gratefully remembered by all of us who were taught by him or who worked with him.

The Faculty expresses its heartfelt condolences to John's wife Cherry and the family.

The funeral arrangements for John Hopkins are as follows:
There will be a thanksgiving service for John at 2.00 on Monday 1 October 2018 at St John’s Church, Hills Road. This will be preceded by a private interment at Barton Glebe.
