The Faculty of Law has formal links with certain institutions in other jurisdictions which our research students can use in order to arrange visits to advance their research with the benefit of the facilities at those other institutions.

Cambridge/Harvard Lawlink

The Faculty has a link with the Harvard Law School which facilitates arrangements for students reading for the PhD at Cambridge to spend time at Harvard and use the facilities there, and similarly for Harvard SJD students to spend time in Cambridge and use the facilities here. Most students using the link apply to go to Harvard in their second year.

Max Planck Institute, Hamburg, Germany

The Faculty has an agreement with the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg whereby research students can (after their first year) apply to spend some time, normally 2 - 5 months between May-September, as a visiting student at this institution. It is not necessary that applicants speak or intend to research in the German language, and the visitor will receive a research grant from the Institute to cover the cost of accommodation and reasonable travel expenses. Programme in European Private Law for Postgraduates (PEPP)

The Programme in European Private Law for Postgraduates (PEPP) is a one-year taught programme, targeted at doctorate students who work in the field of private law in the European context (broadly interpreted). The aim of PEPP is to allow the participants to experience other legal cultures first-hand, build up a European network of peers and to enhance the quality of the academic work of each participant.

PEPP does not require you to take any exams, but you will receive a certificate of participation. Participants then continue their studies at their home faculty with their own doctoral advisers. PEPP will require you to attend at total of four weeks of taught courses, one week in each of the institutions/groups participating in the programme: Group 1: Germany: Münster and Hamburg; Group 2: Poland (Katowice and Warsaw); Group 3: England and Belgium (Cambridge and Leuven); Group 4: Spain and Italy (Valencia and Genoa). PEPP will normally cover the reasonable travel costs of the Cambridge participants.

The LERU Law PhD Exchange Scheme

The Faculty of Law will be participating in the 2016 LERU (League of European Research Universities) Law PhD Exchange Scheme. The aim of this new exchange scheme is to increase international mobility between PhD researchers. Students may apply for research stays of up to six weeks in the calendar year 2016 at one of the participating LERU institutions. The host LERU institution facilitates the student’s academic integration in the research unit of the host institution, offers assistance in finding accommodation and provides a work space for the student where possible. Students themselves will be expected to bear the cost of the stay.
