Interests

My main interest is the criminal law, particularly the history of the criminal law and jurisprudence in England, and at the moment I am writing about the influence of Star Chamber on common law misdemeanours. I think this is an interesting topic for what it tells us of seventeenth century criminal law, and for what it tells us about the rule of law then (and in general). It also goes, with other historical analyses, some way to providing an alternative to the standard analytic explanation of modern criminal law. My main sources are the original records of the King's Bench and Star Chamber in the Public Record Office of the National Archives in London.

In the 2018-2019 academic year I lecture for the Faculty in Criminal Procedure and Evidence, and on the history of the criminal law in the Tripos Legal History paper.

I am Access Officer in the Faculty, and thus play a role in undergraduate student outreach and recruitment (note however that admissions decisions and policies are generally matters for the Colleges of the University, and not the Faculty of Law). I am also Subject Convenor for Law; that role in moderating admissions for Law on behalf of the Colleges is largely internal to the University.

I supervise Criminal Law and Jurisprudence, and usually Contract, for Sidney Sussex College, where I am a Director of Studies for the Law Tripos; my Fellowship there is endowed in memory of John Thornely, a much loved former Law Fellow of Sidney.

Please do not hesitate to email me if I can be of help: if you are a current student, thinking of applying, or just have a question, I would be glad to hear from you.
