Dr Angela Ward, Referendaire, Court of Justice of the EU will give a talk entitled:

"The Impact of EU Charter of Fundamental Rights on Equality Law: more a whimper than a bang?"

This presentation will investigate how the principle of equal treatment has fared in the context of the development of legal rules on the application and enforcement of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. Has this relatively new body of EU constitutional law resulted in more extensive and rigorous protection of the principle of equal treatment, or rather something else?

The rules to be considered are as follows.

-        The prohibition in Article 51 (2) of the Charter on recourse to the Charter to expand EU competence.

-        The distinction between principles and rights in Article 52 (5) of the Charter.

-        The horizontal impact of the Charter in disputes involving two private legal entities.

-        The rules to apply in disputes involving a competition among different Charter rights.
