Thursday, 7 November 2019 - 6.00pm
Location:
Faculty of Law, LG19 (The Arthur Goodhart Lecture Theatre)

Cambridge University Law SocietyOn 7th November 2019, CULS will be hosting what is bound to be a heated debate on 'What Next for Brexit?' between two vocal silks on either side of the divide.

Jolyon Maugham QC and Martin Howe QC will sit down with EU lecturer, and Director of Studies at Hughes Hall, Dr Martin Steinfeld to put to you their evaluation of Brexit's legal landscape.

Jolyon Maugham QC

A vocal proponent of Remain, Jolyon Maugham QC is a practicing Barrister at Devereux Chambers specialising in Tax litigation and Judicial Review. Although currently working as a cross-party adviser, he has previously served as a policy advisor to the Labour Party (under Ed Miliband) and is a regular contributor to national media. Alongside this, Jolyon is also founder and director of the Good Law Project - through which he crowd-funded Gina Miller's challenge of the Government's position that Article 50 could be triggered by Royal Prerogative. And has continued to be the force behind a number of recent legal challenges to Brexit.

Martin Howe QC

On the other side of the debate is Martin Howe QC, a Barrister with practice in Intellectual Property and European Union law, and a graduate of Trinity Hall. With a practice that involves regular appearances at the Court of Justice and European Patent Office amongst others. Martin is also chairman of Lawyers for Britain, a lawyers' group which supported the Leave campaign during the 2016 referendum and have continued to write on the legal issues involved in exiting the EU. Martin has stood as a Conservative Parliamentary Candidate and served as a member of the Commission on a Bill of Rights for the United Kingdom.

Open to all.
