Online webinar

CWILCambridge Women in Law (CWIL) and the Cambridge University Graduate Law Society (CUGLS) are hosting this event Chaired by Professor Nicola Padfield QC who will be joined by the speakers:

  • Allison Munroe QC
  • Busola Johnson
  • Caoilfhionn Gallagher QC and
  • Olivia Magennis.

Questions which we will pose to our panellists include:

  • How can those entering the profession wishing to pursue publicly funded work build their experience to stand out on application forms?
  • Is a career in publicly funded law financially sustainable? Is there a need to take on cases in other areas of law to increase income?
  • Do you believe that unconscious or implicit gender bias continues to have a presence? What are your thoughts on the tendency for women to be pushed into certain areas of law (i.e. family law) and once established in a certain area, not getting certain work (for example female QCs not being instructed in big fraud cases)?
  • How supportive are chambers and employers (particularly financially) to women who have childcare responsibilities?
  • Do clients treat you with respect and do you encounter sexism and/or racism at work?
  • Increased managerialism within the legal system – do you think the pursuit of efficiency is getting in the way of the pursuit of justice?
  • Thoughts on the recent “lefty lawyers” commentary and whether this should be a serious cause for concern
