Speaker: Sir Jonathan Jones KCB QC (Hon), Former Treasury Solicitor and Permanent Secretary of the GLD

Biography: Jonathan Jones spent over 30 years as a government lawyer before standing down at the end of 2020.  He held posts in the Departments for Education and Transport, HM Treasury, the Attorney General’s Office and the Home Office.  From 2013 until 2020 he was Treasury Solicitor, HM Procurator General and Permanent Secretary of the Government Legal Department – the most senior legal official in government.  He has worked on many aspects of public and constitutional law, primary and secondary legislation, public inquiries, national security issues, EU, international and human rights law.  Latterly he was much involved in the legal aspects of the UK’s exit from the EU and the response to the covid crisis.  Jonathan was made an honorary QC in 2019 and appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in the 2020 New Year’s honours.

Abstract: Sir Jonathan was heavily involved in the legal aspects of the UK’s exit from the EU.  In this talk he will discuss the challenges for law in a post Brexit world.
