The Faculty of Law is seeking PhD students (from Law and other disciplines) willing to act as invigilators in the upcoming Easter Term examinations. A brief summary of the role is given below:
- The nature of the role
A Faculty Invigilator’s core responsibility is to walk around the exam hall and check that students are not looking at anything on their laptops other than the Faculty-provided Word document in which they must write their answers. In some smaller rooms, where students have Exam Access Arrangements, the Faculty Invigilator will also be responsible for some additional tasks (timekeeping, etc.). Faculty invigilators will not be able to do any other work of their own while they invigilate.
If you sign up to invigilate, you will receive training and you will be paid for the training time.
- The schedule and hours
The exam schedule hasn’t been released yet, but we expect that exams will start in late May and last for 3 weeks. All exams will take place on weekdays in the Faculty of Law. There will be two exam sessions per day: the morning session will start at 9am, and the afternoon session will start at 2pm. The standard exam duration is 3 hours and 10 min, but in rooms for students with Exam Access Arrangements, the duration can be up to 6 hours.
Rate of Pay
The work will be paid at £18.15 per hour plus holiday pay via the Cambridge Casual Worker System.
How to Apply
If you are interested in serving as a Faculty Invigilator, please complete this form. The form allows you to indicate during which weeks of the exam period you will be available and how many hours you would like to work. Please keep in mind that there are limits on the number of hours PhD students are permitted to work per week (see section 12.4 in the PhD handbook).
If you would like additional information about the role, or if you have any questions, please get in touch with the Deputy Director of Examinations (Lars Vinx, lv330@cam.ac.uk).
