The publication in paperback of Pursuit of Legal Harmony in a Turbulent Europe: Essays in Honour of Eleanor Sharpston, edited by Catherine Barnard, Adam Lazowski and Daniel Sarmiento, marks a comprehensive celebration of the legacy of one of the most influential Advocates General to serve the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).
Published by Hart, an imprint of Bloomsbury, the volume brings together a distinguished group of EU law academics and practitioners to assess the impact of Eleanor Sharpston KC. During her tenure at the Court of Justice, her Opinions helped to define modern EU procedural and substantive law, influencing landmark cases such as Ruiz Zambrano, Sturgeon, and Bougnaoui.
The collection is structured into six parts, reflecting the breadth of Sharpston’s career and interests. Contributors examine the constitutional law of the European Union, fundamental rights, citizenship, litigation, the internal market, and external relations. By exploring these themes, the book provides a masterful commentary on how the European legal order continues to evolve in response to contemporary political and social turbulence.
Catherine Barnard is Professor of European Law at the Faculty and a Senior Tutor of Trinity College. She has co-edited the volume alongside Adam Lazowski, Professor of EU Law at the University of Westminster, and Daniel Sarmiento, Professor of EU and Administrative Law at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
