Workshop on 'The European Judiciary in Times of Crisis: Old and New Challenges'

"What keeps a judiciary resilient under pressure?" That question brought senior judges, legal scholars and political scientists together at King's College, Cambridge, on 6-7 July for a two-day workshop entitled 'The European Judiciary in Times of Crisis: Old and New Challenges'. Held under the Chatham House Rule, it examined how courts respond to democratic erosion, and how institutional, constitutional and judicial resilience might be strengthened.

The opening address was given by Judge Marko Bošnjak of the Court of Justice of the European Union, formerly President of the European Court of Human Rights. Other participants included Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd, former Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, and senior judges from some of Europe's highest courts, alongside leading scholars in the field.

The workshop was organised by Dr Sophie Turenne (Assistant Professor of Comparative Law and Fellow of King's College), and built on the ELI–Mount Scopus European Standards of Judicial Independence. It was supported by the Centre for European Legal Studies, King's College, and the Centre for Public Law. The workshop was held under the auspices of the European Law Institute, and formed part of the activities of the EuroJudge network.
