Yin Harn Lee
Copyright Issues Surrounding Videogame Modifications
Start Date: 2010/09.
End Date: 2013/06.
Yin Harn Lee completed her undergraduate education at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, obtaining an LL.B. (Hons) (with Distinction). She was admitted to the Bar as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in the following year, and worked as a research assistant and a tutor at the University of Malaya before graduating from the University of Cambridge with an LL.M.
Yin Harn is particularly interested in the interactions between copyright law and new technologies, popular culture and user- or fan-created content. Her PhD research at the University of Cambridge will explore two main copyright issues surrounding videogame modifications (or ‘mods’) - add-on software which alters or adds to the content of an existing videogame. The first issue relates to the potential liabilities which creators of mods may incur, both under copyright law and under the terms of the End-User License Agreement subject to which most software is sold; the second issue relates to the potential rights which such creators may possess over their creations.
