Cambridge Delinquency Development Study: 'Looking Back, Looking Forwards'

The Cambridge Study in Delinquent Development (CSDD) is a prospective longitudinal study of 411 London males who were first assessed in 1961–1962, when they were 8 to 9 years old. This study has been a part of the fabric of the Institute of Criminology since it’s inception by Donald West. Led by David P. Farrington since 1982, the CSDD is one of the most influential studies in criminology and boasts a wide range of publications and works. Not only has the CSDD advanced knowledge about criminal careers, risk factors for offending, life success and health, and the effects of life events on the course of development; the findings of this study have influenced policy and research, both nationally and internationally.

The purpose of this talk is to celebrate this influential study and its visionary directors, consider its recent contributions and to reflect upon the process of the electronic archiving of the original paper records. Delivered by Darrick Jolliffe and Hannah Gaffney this talk will provide an overview of the CSDD, present the some recent findings derived from the interviews with the men at age 70, and importantly, reflect on the future developments that will maintain the CSDD as a world-leading study.
