Speaker: Matthew Gillet (Senior Lecturer at the University of Essex and a United Nations Special Mandate Holder (Chair-Rapporteur of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention))

Fred Abrahams worked for nearly 30 years at Human Rights Watch, first as a researcher and then as a senior manager. He helped start the Emergencies division, now called the Crisis, Conflict and Arms division, and has worked in places such as Albania, Kosovo, Sri Lanka, Syria, Libya, and IsraelPalestine. Most recently he supervised HRW’s divisions that cover Crisis and Conflict, Arms and Technology, including the Digital Investigations Lab, and managed HRW’s internal research training.

Fred worked at the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal and has testified in five war crimes trials, including against former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic. His books include A Village Destroyed: War Crimes in Kosovo (co-written) and Modern Albania: from Dictatorship to Democracy. Today he teaches human rights at Bard College Berlin and is faculty lead of BCB’s Digital Verification Corps.

The CGHR Practitioner Series allows students to hear from and ask questions of high-level experts working in international politics, journalism, development and humanitarianism.

The event is free and everyone is welcome, but for organisational reasons registration is required: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cghr-practitioner-series-meet-a-former-as...
