Speaker: Professor Menesh Patel (University of California, Davis)
Abstract: Electricity is the lifeblood of the modern economy. It powers industry, keeps us warm, allows us to communicate, and literally keeps the lights on. In recent years, the price of electricity has been rising, making it harder for families to pay their power bills. Increased demand due to climate change and the AI data center boom can partially explain rising prices. But another culprit is increased concentration. A merger wave has swept across the wholesale electricity generation market, and the result is higher prices for consumers.
