Speaker: Professor Laura Gamboa (Notre Dame University)
About the speaker: Laura Gamboa is an assistant professor of democracy and global affairs in the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame. Her research agenda is centered on questions related to the survival and quality of democratic systems. In her 2022 book Resisting Backsliding: Opposition Strategies against the Erosion of Democracy, she analyzes how opposition strategic choices and goals can decisively affect the ability of potential autocrats to erode democracy.
About the series: the Dialogues on Democratic Resilience series organised in collaboration with the Centre for Public Law provides a platform for scholars, students, and members of the general public to examine the causes and dynamics of democratic decline and to explore strategies for strengthening democratic institutions. Interdisciplinary in scope, the series places particular emphasis on the role of law and legal institutions, investigating how they can both contribute to democratic erosion and function as vital safeguards against.
