About the speaker: Yascha Mounk is an associate professor of the practice of international affairs at Johns Hopkins University. He is best known for his work on the rise of populism and the crisis of liberal democracy. His book The People vs Democracy: Why Our Freedom is In Danger and How to Save It has been translated into ten languages and recognized as a Best Book of 2018 by the Financial Times and other publications. His most recent book is The Identity Trap: A Story of Ideas and Power in Our Time. Mounk regularly writes for newspapers and magazines including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, Foreign Affairs, Slate, and Die Zeit.
About the series: the Dialogues on Democratic Resilience series organised in collaboration with the Centre for Public Law provides a platform for scholars, students, and members of the general public to examine the causes and dynamics of democratic decline and to explore strategies for strengthening democratic institutions. Interdisciplinary in scope, the series places particular emphasis on the role of law and legal institutions, investigating how they can both contribute to democratic erosion and function as vital safeguards against.
