Eleanor Sharpston QCThe Faculty is delighted to announce that Ms Eleanor Sharpston KC will serve as the Arthur Goodhart Visiting Professor in Legal Science for the academic year 2023-24.

Eleanor has combined a career in practice at the Bar (specialising in European Union and ECHR Law) with an academic career first at UCL and then in Cambridge where she was a University Lecturer from 1992 to 1998 and an Affiliated Lecturer from 1998 to 2006. She was also previously joint head of Hailsham Chambers.

Throughout her career, Eleanor has retained her links with the Law Faculty as Yorke Distinguished Visiting Fellow, and the Centre for European Legal Studies (CELS), where she is a member of the Advisory Board. Eleanor is an Honorary Fellow of the British Academy, an Emeritus Fellow at King’s College, Cambridge, and an Honorary Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. She also holds four Honorary Doctorates from the Universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stockholm and Nottingham Trent and is an Adjunct Professor at the Law School in Trinity College Dublin and an Honorary Professor at the Graduate Law School in Riga.

In January 2006 Eleanor took up the post of Advocate General at the European Court of Justice where she served until 2020 and delivered a number of landmark Opinions in varied fields of EU Law.

In taking up the Goodhart position, Eleanor is looking forward to being involved again in the teaching of EU law both at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
