Tuesday, 28 February 2023 - 6.00pm
Location:
Fitzwilliam College, Gordon Cameron Lecture Theatre

Fitzwilliam College will be holding an event to mark LGBTQIA+ History Month. The event is open to all – students, staff, academics and anyone that you would like to bring as a guest. Booking is not required.

An informal conversation between Fitz’s three law Fellows, Stevie Martin (Human Rights), Jonathan Rogers (Criminal) and Anna Heenan (Family) concerning the ways in which the law has regulated, restricted and facilitated LGBTQIA+ relationships.

Anna, Jonathan and Stevie will each speak to an area of their respective fields of research which illuminates the impact the ‘law’ (as broadly understood) has had on LGBTQIA+ families. Topics will include the ways in which the heteronormative structures and constructs underpinning family law impact and influence LGBTQIA+ families, the history and ongoing legacy of criminalising same-sex relationships and the ways in which human rights have been employed to compel the law to extend protections to LGBTQIA+ families. There will be ample time for questions and further discussion between speakers and those attending.

As none of the speakers have expertise in the area of equality law, they are not able to speak to the current debate surrounding the legality of Scotland’s Gender Recognition Bill.

For more information contact Dr Nicola Jones (communications@fitz.cam.ac.uk).
