Location:
Institute of Criminology, Seminar Room B3

The Centre for Penal Theory and Penal Ethics in collaboration with the Sentencing Institute and The Cambridge Centre for Criminal Justice are holding this seminar on 'Multiple Offence Sentencing'.

Seminar Chair: Professor Nicola Padfield, QC (Hon), Master of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge.

Speakers:

  • Sir Anthony Bottoms, Emeritus Wolfson Professor of Criminology at the University of Cambridge;
  • His Honour Judge Sean Enright;
  • Julian V. Roberts, Professor of Criminology at the University of Oxford and member of the Sentencing Council for England and Wales;
  • Jesper Ryberg, Professor of Ethics and Philosophy of Law at Roskilde University, Denmark.

People often assume that most criminal offenders are convicted of a single crime. However, in reality about half of offenders are convicted of more than one crime – often several. The high proportion of “multiple crime offenders” poses a number of practical and theoretical challenges for the criminal justice system. In particular, how should courts punish multiple offenders relative to individuals who have been sentenced for a single crime?

The recent publication of Sentencing Multiple Crimes, edited by Jesper Ryberg, Julian Roberts and Jan de Keijser (Oxford U.P.) provides a path-breaking collection of essays on this very important but neglected topic.

In this seminar we will hear from three scholars who have contributed to this book, and from a judge who regularly passes sentence in the Crown Court. There will also be significant time for discussion. The aim is to explore thoroughly both theoretical and practical aspects of this key topic.

A drinks reception in the basement foyer will follow this seminar for attendees.

This seminar is free, and is open to all interested in attending, with no ticket required.
