Tuesday, 17 March 2020 - 9.00am
Location:
Faculty of Law, G24

Convenors: Catherine Barnard, University of Cambridge, Hussein Kassim, University of East Anglia, and Simon Usherwood, University of Surrey, all ESRC ‘The UK in a Changing Europe’

Brexit has created a rupture in relations between the UK and the EU. Yet what the decision to leave the EU implies for the future of the UK’s diplomatic, economic and security relationship with Europe remains unclear three years after the June 2016 referendum. The precise consequences will depend on the terms of the future UK-EU economic partnership and whether the UK will be able to create mechanisms to influence EU policy in the future and the political, economic and diplomatic fallout. How the UK has approached the negotiations poses one set of questions, but also important is how Brexit has been managed as a political and a policy issue within the EU and the implications of the UK’s departure for European (dis)integration and the future of the European project, which has undergone a period of sustained crisis.

Topics which are looking to cover in the workshop include, but are not limited to:

  • Understanding Brexit in the historical context of UK-EU relations
  • Explaining the UK’s approach to negotiations with the EU
  • Brexit and the context of crises in the European Union
  • How the EU’s institutions and actors have responded to Brexit
  • How individual member states have responded to Brexit
  • EU-UK policy co-operation post-Brexit
  • The legal issues involved in the negotiation process and related issues

The UK in a Changing Europe, an academic organisation dedicated to providing state of the art social sciences insights into Brexit to a non-academic audience, is keen to widen its network of early career researchers. To this end, this workshop is planned as part of a series of workshops bringing together younger and more experienced scholars to discuss new research on key areas of the Brexit debate. Younger scholars stand to benefit from being part of networks in their area of expertise, whilst also profiting from the opportunities that collaboration with UKICE will provide to achieve greater impact for their research.

Participants will have the opportunity to share and present their work and receive feedback from senior academics working in the field of European studies. The workshop will provide a forum to explore possibilities for further collaboration, and to forge links to disseminate and publicise your research with the ESRC’s UK in a Changing Europe initiative. We are able to support travel and overnight accommodation for successful applicants.

Researchers, who may be PhD students, post-docs, or researchers who completed their PhD on or before 31 December 2014, are invited to send an abstract of no more than 300 words together with their name, affiliation, and two-page CV, which should include academic record to date (degrees taken, publications, prizes, etc). Please send applications by email to Dr Pippa Lacey, ntf.ppl@uea.ac.uk to arrive no later than 10 January 2020 midnight GMT.

For queries about the call, please contact Professor Hussein Kassim (h.kassim@uea.ac.uk). If you have any questions about the practical elements of the workshop, please contact Felicity Eves Rey (fre20@cam.ac.uk).
