Friday, 25 February 2022 - 1.00pm
Location:
Faculty of Law, B16

The Cambridge Private Law Centre will host a series of ‘current developments’ and ‘research in progress’ seminars this term both in-person and over Zoom.

Speakers: Nick McBride (Pembroke) and Alex Waghorn (Selwyn)

Nick McBride (Pembroke College) and Alex Waghorn (Selwyn College) will lead discussion of how the principles of English private law might apply in real-life situations described in the newspapers:

(1) The case of the winning scratchcard

Two men buy a lottery scratchcard that turns out to be worth £4m. Unfortunately, they bought the scratchcard with a debit card stolen from a third party. Who is entitled to the winnings from the scratchcard?

(2) The case of the Canadian truckers

$10m is raised on GoFundMe to support the cause of truckers making up a ‘Freedom Convoy’ that will blockade the streets of Ottawa, Canada’s capital and seat of government. GoFundMe becomes reluctant to release the money to the truckers, citing the illegality of their protest and (at least initially) propose to disburse the money to other causes. Who is entitled to the $10m?

This event will take place in B16 in the Faculty of Law, or you can attend via Zoom.
