Friday, 5 May 2023 - 5.00pm
Location:
Faculty of Law, LG18 (The David Li Kwok Po Lecture Theatre)

This year, the faculty is organising three seminars on key public law cases, given by three of our Yorke Distinguished Visiting Fellows – Lord Carnwath, Lady Hale, and Lord Lloyd-Jones.

The third of these seminars will take place on Friday 5 May, at 5pm in LG18. It will be given by Lord Lloyd-Jones, looking at “Maduro Board” of the Central Bank of Venezuela v “Guaidó Board” of Central Bank of Venzuela [2021] UKSC 57. Lord Lloyd-Jones will talk about the case, and Alison Young will then give a brief response, before floor is opened to questions.

The case concerns issues that arise when courts are required to determine who is to be recognised as the head of a foreign state, the foreign act of state doctrine, and the relationship between the two. How far should courts rely on statements from the government, or determine these issues for themselves? It would be fascinating to hear from our wonderful international law graduate community about how similar issues are treated in their legal systems.

The talk will be followed by a drinks reception, from 6pm to 6:30pm, in the atrium in the law faculty.

All students and faculty members are welcome. The case is an important case for those studying international law, in particular the relationship between international law and domestic law. LLM and PhD students are also very welcome to attend.
