Wednesday, 22 November 2023 - 6.00pm
Location:
Faculty of Law, LG17

(Registration from 5.30pm)

Speakers: Dr Sam Fowles (Barrister), Cornerstone Chambers & Michael Frape, Cambridgeshire Law Society and Ashtons Legal

The last seven years have seen unprecedented attacks on the rule of law and also the undermining of the justice system generally. Just two examples of those attacks being Miller II /Cherry v. The Prime Minister [2020] and the passing of the Internal Markets Bill in September2020, which caused the UK Government to breach international law (the Withdrawal Agreement)albeit only in ‘a specific and limited way’. This period has been completely unprecedented in English judicial and parliamentary history.

But with the demise of the Johnson government in 2022, can we now expect a return to longstanding democratic norms including the UK Government upholding the rule of law or is the rule of law still under threat?

We are delighted that Barrister Dr Sam Fowles will seek to answer that question. Sam is a leading public law barrister, who will draw on his involvement in some of the most high profile cases in this area, including Miller II, the Post Office scandal and the inquiry into the policing at Clapham Common.

Following Sam’s presentation, Michael Frape (President – Cambridgeshire Law Society) will chair a Q&A session seeking to explore the topic in more detail. The event timings are as follows:

  • 6pm-7pm – Presentation followed by Q&A
  • 7pm-8pm - Refreshments and Networking

This event is free to attend for members and law students only. Please RSVP to admin@cambslaw.com
