Thursday, 14 March 2024 - 3.15pm
Location:
David Attenborough Building, Room 2.49

Speaker: Théodore Tallent (PhD Candidate, Sciences Po | Visiting Researcher, CEENRG)

The Cambridge Centre for Environment, Energy, and Natural Resource Governance (C-EENRG) is hosting a seminar series throughout the 2023- 24 academic year.

With the climate crisis calling for more stringent policies, the green transition has sparked significant resistance among the population in Europe. However, while so-called green discontent seems particularly vivid in peripheral regions, knowledge is lacking regarding its geography and drivers. Through a quantitative analysis of survey data, I first investigate the geography of green discontent in Europe, focusing particularly on the urban-rural divide in attitudes towards the green transition. Then, mobilising qualitative data from fieldwork in the peripheries of Eastern France, I explore the multiple and entangled dimensions of green discontent. This work highlights the importance of addressing both material and nonmaterial dimensions to mitigate resistance and facilitate the acceleration of the green transition in peripheral regions.

Seminars take place as hybrid meetings (in person seminars in the DAB - David Attenborough Building + online in Zoom) every Thursday (please check precise time as may vary) during the term. Please register online to receive the Zoom link on the day of the seminar. Everyone is welcome!
