Thursday, 23 January 2025 - 3.00pm
Location:
David Attenborough Building, Room 2.49

Speaker: Dr Samvel Varvastian (Lecturer in Law, School of Law and Politics, Cardiff University)

The Cambridge Centre for Environment, Energy, and Natural Resource Governance (C-EENRG) is hosting a seminar series throughout the 2024- 25 academic year.

We live in the age of the triple planetary crisis – climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss – which takes a huge toll on communities all around the world, endangering their fundamental interests. But can the lack of government action on this crisis – or action that worsens it – amount to violations of human rights? Many courts are grappling with this question, as rights-based litigation becomes increasingly common. A systematic analysis of such litigation in more than 30 jurisdictions shows that although not all litigation forums are equally favourable to such claims, human rights can indeed be successfully invoked to confront the planetary crises in different types of legal action. This presentation will discuss the key issues that emerge from these findings and the lessons for the road ahead.

Seminars take place as hybrid meetings (in person seminars in the DAB - David Attenborough Building + online in Zoom) every Thursday (please check precise time as may vary) during the term. Please register online to receive the Zoom link on the day of the seminar. Everyone is welcome!
