Research Associate (Part Time, Fixed Term)

Professors Mark Elliott and Alison Young wish to appoint a Research Associate to work on a project entitled 'Constitutional Law Matters'. The project is being undertaken at the Faculty of Law, University of Cambridge. It is concerned with public debate about and understanding of the UK constitution. The project will involve a number of strands, including a series of public events, a website, a series of podcasts and a longer term book project. The Research Associate will will work as part of a team including Professors Elliott and Young and a Research Assistant.

The events will take place in the academic year 2021-2. They will focus on: Parliament; the judiciary; devolution issues, and the executive. Each event will consist of pre-recorded materials from a range of contributors, with the event itself providing an opportunity for each contributor to provide a précis of their contribution, to engage with the contributions of others and to respond to questions and answer for the public more generally. The events will be supplemented by a series of podcasts. The events will either take place in-person (with live-streaming) or will take place online only (depending on the public health situation in the academic year 2021-22).

The Research Associate will be responsible, under the direction of Professors Elliott and Young, as the project's academic leads, for undertaking research relating to the project, for producing (with the Research Assistant) written pieces (such as 'explainers' and short accounts of recent constitutionally important issues) for the website, for assisting with the setting up of the website and the podcast programme, and for co-ordinating arrangements for the series of events.

The position requires a degree in law with expertise in Public Law. In addition, it requires a PhD or equivalent professional qualification. Applications from those who will have completed their PhD by the end of September will be considered.

The post is a fixed-term, part time (0.5 full-time equivalent) post. The funds for this post are currently available for 12 months.

As part of your application, you will be asked to upload a 1,000 word piece of writing aimed at a general, non-specialist audience, on the topic: 'Henry VIII clauses - are they are problem and, if so, what do we do about them?' The piece of writing should take the form of an 'explainer' piece that could be posted on a website aimed at the general public.
