Intoxication and Society: Problematic Pleasures of Drugs and AlcoholThe latest publication from the Cambridge Socio-Legal Group, due to be published in December, is Intoxication and Society, edited by Jonathan Herring, Ciaran Regan, Darin Weinberg and Phil Withington. Produced following a Socio-Legal Group workshop meeting in Cambridge for all contributors and some invited discussants, the collection brings together contributions from historians, sociologists, lawyers, medics, geographers and philosophers, looking at the nature of intoxication. The volume considers a broad range of issues from the way expertise over intoxication has been constructed to cultural practices surrounding intoxication, from the nature of the intoxicated self to the legal responsibility of those who are intoxicated. It brings together a lively and stimulating set of essays, by leading figures in the field. The book demonstrates the chaotic, lopsided, staggering response of the law, politics and society to intoxication.

The Group's next projects will be on Marriage Rites and Rights, both contemporary and historical (the first stage of which will be edited by Joanna Miles, Perveez Mody and Rebecca Probert), and there are further plans in the pipeline for projects on Home and on Care.
