Cambridge Jessup Moot Runners Up 2013Representing the UK at the International Rounds of the Philip C. Jessup Moot Court Competition in Washington DC, the Cambridge Jessup Team secured a place among the 32 top teams breaking to the Advanced Rounds of the Competition last week. One of the team members, Deepak Raju, was listed in the top 10 speakers of the competition.

The team, comprised of LL.M students Mark Ma (Christ's), Amanda Richter (Lucy Cavendish), Deepak Raju (Darwin), Kate Tyrrell (Darwin) and Jiakang Yan (Newnham), had earlier won their participation in the International Rounds as the runners-up of the UK National Championship. Their achievements in London and Washington DC ensured that Cambridge’s return to the competition, after years of absence, has been a resounding success.

Dr Michael Waibel (Jesus) and Ph.D. candidates Valentin Jeutner (Caius) and Bart Smit Duijzentkunst (Caius) coached the team.

The Jessup is the world’s largest and most prestigious mooting competition, annually attracting more than 550 teams from over 80 countries. This year's hypothetical case before the International Court of Justice considered the effects of climate change on issues of statehood, migration and sovereign debt.

The Cambridge Jessup team would like to thank all those who have assisted with their preparation as guest-judges and gratefully acknowledges the generous sponsorship of the following organisations:

  • Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP
  • Ashurst LLP
  • Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP
  • 4 New Square
  • Latham & Watkins LLP

The Lauterpacht Centre, the Whewell Trust, Newham College, Gonville and Caius College, Christ’s College, Darwin College and Lucy Cavendish also contributed to the team.
