Sir John ThomasThe Faculty notes with great pleasure the appointment of Sir John Thomas as Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales.

A Welshman by origin, he read Law at Trinity Hall in the mid-1960s, of which he became an Honorary Fellow in 2004. In recent years he has been a frequent and welcome visitor to the Faculty, taking an active part in various conferences – in particular ones organised by the Centre for European Legal Studies.

In his previous roles of Vice-President and then President of the Queen’s Bench Division he has delivered a number of highly significant judgments, particularly in the area of criminal justice, with which as teachers we are all familiar. We congratulate him on his appointment and wish him well.

For more information, please see the 10 Downing Street website.  A statement from Sir John on his appointment is available on the Judiciary website.
