Lord Neuberger Delivers Cambridge Freshfields Lecture on 'The British and Europe'On Wednesday 12 February 2014 Lord Neuberger, President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, delivered the inaugural 2014 Cambridge Freshfields Lecture entitled "The British and Europe" at the Faculty of Law, University of Cambridge.

The consequences of membership of the European Union and of the Council of Europe appear to involve disquiet and controversy in the United Kingdom, and perhaps particularly in England. In his talk, Lord Neuberger considered the question of why this is so, and contrasted the attitude in this country with that in other European countries. He examined the issue from various perspectives, including the geographical, historical, religious, cultural, constitutional and legal angles, and considered the implications for the future.

The Cambridge Freshfields Lecture is an annual address delivered by a guest of the Cambridge Private Law Centre, and the event is sponsored by Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.

This event was attended by many Judges of the Supreme Court, senior barristers, practitioners and commentators, teaching members and students of the Faculty, and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz. The talk has featured in a number of publications:
