Cambridge graduates appointed to the Supreme CourtThe Faculty was delighted to hear that each of the newly appointed Justices of the United Kingdom Supreme Court is a Cambridge Law graduate. We warmly congratulate Sir David Kitchin, Dame Mary Arden and Sir Philip Sales on their appointments. All three currently sit in the Court of Appeal.

Dame Mary Arden read law at Girton College. When appointed to the High Court in 1993 she was the first woman judge assigned to the Chancery Division. She served as Chairman of the Law Commission of England and Wales from 1996 to 1999. She became a Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague in 2011, and serves an ad hoc UK judge of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

Sir David Kitchin read Natural Sciences and Law at Fitzwilliam College. He was appointed as a judge of the High Court, Chancery Division in 2005 and as Senior Judge of the Patents Court in 2007. He was appointed as a Lord Justice of Appeal in 2011 and was the Lord Justice responsible for the supervision of intellectual property appeals.

Sir Philip Sales read Law at Churchill College. He was First Treasury Counsel Common Law until his appointment to the High Court, Chancery Division in 2008. He was a member of the Competition Appeal Tribunal between 2008 and 2015, and Vice-President of the Investigatory Powers Tribunal between 2014 and 2015. Between 2009 and 2014 he served as Deputy Chair of the Boundary Commission for England.

Lady Justice Arden and Lord Justice Kitchin will join the Court on 1 October 2018, followed by Lord Justice Sales on 11 January 2019. Of the current Justices of the Supreme Court, Lady Hale, President of the Court, is a graduate of Girton College, Lord Carnwath is a graduate of Trinity College, Lord Hodge is a graduate of Corpus Christi, and Lord Lloyd-Jones is a graduate of Downing College.
