Judge James Richard CrawfordThe Squire Law Library and the Faculty of Law are pleased to announce that an entry for ICJ Judge James Richard Crawford, Emeritus Whewell Professor of International Law, has been added to the Eminent Scholars Archive.

Judge Crawford was interviewed at the Peace Palace in The Hague on two consecutive days in May 2018. In addition to transcripts of the audio recordings, readers will find a photographic gallery of his life.

Judge Crawford was born in Adelaide in 1948, where he attended school and studied for his BA and LLB at the University of Adelaide. He did his doctoral studies at University College Oxford, where he was supervised by the late eminent international lawyer Dr Ian Brownlie, who later became the Chichele Professor. James Crawford's doctoral thesis was later published as the ground-breaking The Creation of States in International Law. He spent twelve years teaching in the Adelaide department, rising from Assistant Lecturer to Professor, before taking the Challis Chair of International Law at the University of Sydney in 1986. Twenty-three years as the Whewell Professor at Cambridge followed, and culminated in his election to the ICJ bench in 2015.

In the interviews, Judge Crawford gives, inter alia, insightful observations on his formative years in South Australia and Oxford, his work on the Australian Law Reform Commission, his impressive record of ICJ casework, his contributions to the UN International Law Commission, and his first impressions of the milieu of the International Court of Justice at the Peace Palace.

The Eminent Scholars Archive is available to listen, or subscribe to, via the University Streaming Media Service and iTunes.
