The Faculty of Law were delighted to welcome Justice Prathiba M Singh on 15 October for an event to celebrate the award of this year’s Prathiba M Singh Scholarships to Surahbi Lal and Avantik Tamta. The event was presented by Cambridge University Vice-Chancellor Stephen Toope, and Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Eilís Ferran.

Prathiba M Singh is an Indian alumna of the Faculty of Law. After completing her LLM in 1992 she returned to India to work in Intellectual Property. She became the managing partner of Singh & Singh Law Firm in New Delhi and is considered one of India's leading IP litigators. In 2013 Prathiba Singh was designated Senior Advocate by the Delhi High Court, the first time that an Intellectual Property practitioner has been elevated to this role. Four years on, in May 2017, Prathiba was elevated to a Judge of the Delhi High Court, becoming Justice Prathiba M Singh.

The scholarships are co-funded, managed, and awarded by the Cambridge Trust, and enable exceptional Indian Law students to have the opportunity to follow in Justice Singh’s academic and professional footsteps. Eligible students are those who show a strong interest in Intellectual Property Law and who intend to pursue a legal career in India. Since the inception of the scheme, nine outstanding recipients have successfully completed their studies at the Faculty of Law and returned to India.

It was a wonderful occasion, and the Faculty were delighted to recognise the generous philanthropy of one of our alumnae, who herself came to Cambridge to study an LLM with the benefit of a scholarship.

I assure you that the one thing I am really going to learn from this is the art of giving back to the community. I am going to make sure that one day I am in a position to change someone’s life in the way that this scholarship has changed mine.Surabhi Lal, Prathiba M. Singh Scholar 2019
